Most medical records are still stored on paper, which means there are limitations in coordinating care, the ability to routinely measure quality, or reduce medical errors. As a result, providers and consumers generally lack the information they need about costs or quality to make informed care decisions. Today there is consensus that wide-scale adoption of electronic health record (EHR) systems will improve care, increase communication between parties, and enhance professionals’ ability to gather data to improve the effectiveness and efficiency throughout the healthcare system.

Learn from leaders in the field who will share insight into the history of medical records, the role of ethics, how moving to EHRs can improve healthcare functioning, and how understanding usability can ensure your EHR meets your long-term needs.

In our continued series on the Patient Centered Health Care Home, we will bring together a panel who will share insights advancements in the medical home and the use of outcomes-boosting health IT solutions.

About the Webinar

While most industries have aggressively leveraged information technology (IT) to improve quality and reduce costs, the healthcare sector has lagged behind. Many physicians and organizations have been reluctant to make this move but due to federal regulations and incentives for implementation there is more and more realization of the value health IT will bring to a practice, an organization and the industry as a whole.

Health information technology (HIT) makes it possible for healthcare providers and organizations to better manage patient care through secure use and sharing of health information. This is especially true in the Patient Centered Health Care Home. Incorporating HIT into practice allows hospitals and providers to have:
  • Accurate and complete information about a patient's health that allows professionals to provide the best possible care, whether during a routine visit or a medical emergency.
  • The ability to identify patients with chronic conditions and coordinate their care so exacerbations and setbacks can be reduced that cause readmissions and contribute to escalating costs.
  • Interoperability and a secure way to share information with providers, payers, and patients over the Internet.
  • A way for patients and families to access their health information so they engaged in their care and better able to make informed health care decisions.
  • Information to assist physicians, specialists and other members of the team diagnose health problems sooner, reduce medical errors, and provide safer care at lower costs.
Practices that are moving to the Patient Centered Health Care Home realize implementing an electronic health record is costly and time consuming. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has argued that usability may be the single biggest obstacle to widespread adoption and use of electronic health records in clinical settings. EHR systems must present and record often complex medical information, in a wide variety of formats, so that it can be easily accessed and used by clinicians and other users.

Understanding the barriers ahead as well as the benefits is key to successful implementation. This webinar invites you to join a team of professional who will review
  • The history and progression to the EHR,
  • The challenges and benefits to an organization/practice
  • Questions those responsible in the evaluation process should ask to ensure optimal EHR usability.
