Managing Chronic Pain:

How a Team-Based Effort Creates Productivity Gains and Healthier Outcomes

According to the American Osteopathic Association more than 76 million Americans are affected each year by chronic pain—more than cancer, diabetes and heart disease rates combined. The National Institutes of Health estimates that the economic cost of pain exceeds $100 billion per year in the U.S., including healthcare utilization costs and lost workforce productivity.

Join a leading faculty on November 17 to learn about the advances being made in the treatment of chronic pain—including expert advice on returning workers to health, vocational rehabilitation programs, and the management of chronic pain from a psychosocial perspective—and the vital role of the care coordination team in improving functioning and quality of life for patients and families.

Attend from your desktop or conference room. Invite your whole team to attend at one low price of $329 per location. Each registration comes with access to the archived version of the program and the materials until December 31, 2011.

Continuing education credits have been applied for nurses, case managers, social workers and disability management specialists.

About the Webinar

With advances in technology and effective collaboration among the multidisciplinary team, the management of patients with chronic pain is improving. Today we are learning the importance of having clear and focused goals that are critical for successful outcomes.

Unrealistic goals, such as elimination of all pain, lead to disappointment for patients, healthcare providers, and family members. Over the years, through collaboration with psychologists, specialty physicians and other members of the team, new goals are being set that are realistic and achievable. Examples include:

  • Understanding that pain is real and individualized to each person.
  • Mechanisms to reduce emotional distress, such as depression and anxiety, and master coping techniques.
  • Reduction of pain.
  • Exercises to increase activity levels, reduce amount of time resting during the day, and the ability to carry out functional life activities.
  • Plans to reduce opioid medication or use it more appropriately.
  • Strategies to reduce/resolve disability claims and return patients to work or evaluate them for vocational training.
  • Efforts to decrease the use of medical resources through effective management.

Early identification, working to determine a diagnosis and implementing a plan of care to address the patient’s needs are the goals of all involved in care coordination, but it is especially important in reducing the burden of chronic pain in both work and nonwork-related injuries and illness.

As members of the healthcare team, case managers have an important role to play in helping to identify patients who are in pain, educating the patient and the family so they understand the need for testing and adherence to the plan of care and support in addressing barriers and challenges that they meet along the way.

To help provide an understanding of the advances in the management of patients with chronic pain, the Case In Point Webinar series convenes an expert faculty with a wide breadth of experience in working with patients who suffer from chronic pain. They will share their expertise and knowledge as well as how the multidisciplinary team can work together to effectively manage patients with chronic pain.
