Registered nurse Amy Berman was 51 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that had spread. She writes about why she chose palliative care over aggressive treatment. Instead of waging a war she cannot win, she writes, she and her physician are focusing on treatments that optimize how she functions and addresses symptoms. "I want every patient facing end-of-life decisions -- which, when you think about it, eventually will be all of us -- to have access to the kind of open communication I'm receiving.
