The counterfeit drug industry is estimated to be worth $75 billion worldwide and has expanded from so-called lifestyle drugs to nearly every kind of medication, including drugs to treat HIV-AIDS, diabetes and malaria, as well as medical devices such as surgical instruments, blood glucose test strips and contact lenses, experts say. Counterfeit drugs and devices are most common in developing countries, but they have found their way into developed countries' markets, mostly through online pharmacies.
