Technology, surgery and other treatments in health care can overshadow a physician's ability to show compassion for patients, says Dr. Manoj Jain, an infectious disease specialist in Memphis. He says he tells medical students to show compassion by talking or listening to patients, taking time with them and even touching them with genuine concern.
