Spinal cord should be monitored during certain surgeries

The American Academy of Neurology has issued an updated guideline advising providers to monitor the patient's spinal cord during spinal surgery and certain chest surgeries to avoid paralysis or loss of muscle function. Intraoperative monitoring of the spinal cord can allow surgeons to identify and correct problems.
