Nursing groups are happy the CMS listened to them and crafted rules governing accountable care organizations that
recognize the value of patient-centered quality care. While the rules do not specifically address nurses, experts see
them playing key roles as care managers, educators and transition coordinators. Registered nurse Cheryl Schraeder of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing said there are many opportunities for nurses because of their skills, and registered nurse Patti Jones of consultant Millman said nurses are the logical choice to help patients navigate
care.
