A study by New York-based physicians published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found an estimated $6.8 billion
was spent on unnecessary medical treatments and screenings in 2009. Researchers found the biggest expenditure, by
far, was tied to physicians prescribing brand-name statins over available generics, which accounted for $5.8 billion of
the costs.
