Patients who underwent hip-replacement surgery at a hospital that performed 200 or fewer operations annually had an increased risk of pulmonary embolism within 30 days of the surgery, compared with those who had the surgery at higher-volume hospitals, U.S. researchers reported in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. People who had total hip-replacement surgery at hospitals with low surgical volume and those age 65 and above who had total knee-replacement surgery at similar facilities were more likely to die within one year after the operation compared with those having the procedures done at high-volume medical centers, the study found.
