Joanna L. Bokovoy, DrPH, RN
Dr. Joanna Bokovoy is Assistant Vice President, Healthcare Improvement & Research at Adventist Health in Roseville, CA. In this role, she directs the clinical analytics team and works closely with clinical quality, information technology, accounting and other groups on Healthcare Knowledge Management as part of a larger Business Intelligence platform. She is actively involved in activities and projects designed to address Value Based Purchasing, Meaningful Use and Process Improvement. She oversees a safety culture initiative begun in 2008, working with AH 17 hospitals and a world renowned safety researcher from Duke University to improve safety, teamwork and spiritual climate scores at all sites. She is also involved in an innovations team addressing clinical costs and one focusing on grant funding for simulation education.
Previously, Dr. Bokovoy was Director of Clinical Innovations at Catholic Healthcare West corporate in San Francisco, California, where she was the clinical leader for a 3-year multi-disciplinary project to improve Severe Sepsis mortality and cost in 41 hospitals throughout California, Nevada and Arizona which saved nearly 991 lives and decreased costs by 36.5 million. Dr. Bokovoy spent over 10 years as a researcher, including 6 years as director of healthcare research department at a large academic health system, and over 9 years as a direct care nurse, with progressive leadership roles. She holds an Associate Degree in Nursing, a Bachelors’ degree in Elementary Education/Biology, a Masters’ degree in Public Health education, and a Doctorate in Public Health, preventive care/epidemiology.
Dr. Bokovoy’s research agenda focuses on knowledge management and implementation science. She has presented her collaborative research at national and international conferences, and has more than 20 publications in journals and books. She teaches quality improvement, research and evidence-based practice methods to clinicians and provides assistance in study design and analysis of research projects, including research on system sustainability of innovations and the effectiveness of Severe Sepsis education on mortality. She co-authored this book, entitled "Clinical Research in Practice: A Guide for the Bedside Scientist" and published by Jones and Bartlett in 2006, with Dr. Janet Houser.

Elizabeth Goldstein, Ph.D., is the Director of the Division of Consumer Assessment and Plan Performance at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Since 1997 she has been working on the development and implementation of CAHPS (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Surveys in a variety of settings, including health and drug plans, hospitals and home health agencies. She is responsible for all of the Medicare CAHPS surveys, the Part C plan ratings, the star ratings for Medicare Advantage quality bonus payments, Medicare HEDIS data collection, Part D enrollment analyses, and consumer testing for CMS quality tools. In addition to her work at CMS, she has conducted research and has published articles related to patient experience surveys, long-term care, home health care, comparative behavior of for-profit and nonprofit organizations, integrated healthcare delivery systems, child day care, and substance abuse treatment programs. She received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her B.A. from Wellesley College.

Jessie Gruman is president of the Center for Advancing Health, a nonpartisan, Washington‐based policy institute founded in 1992 and supported by foundations and individuals to work on patient engagement: people will not benefit from the health care available to them unless they can participate fully and competently in it.
Dr. Gruman draws on her own experience of treatment for four cancer diagnoses, surveys, peer‐reviewed research and interviews with patients and caregivers as the basis of her work to describe – and advocate for policies and practices to overcome – the challenges people face in finding good care and getting the most from it. Dr. Gruman has worked on this same set of concerns in the private sector (AT&T), the public sector (National Cancer Institute) and the voluntary health sector (American Cancer Society). She holds a B.A. from Vassar College and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Columbia University and is a Professorial Lecturer in the School of Public Health and Health Services at The George Washington University. She serves on the board of trustees of the Center for Medical Technology Policy and the Technical Board of the Milbank Memorial Fund.
Dr. Gruman was honored by Research!America for her leadership in advocacy for health research and received honorary doctorates from Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Clark University, Georgetown University, New York University, Northeastern University, Salve Regina University, Syracuse University and Tulane University, and the Presidential Medal of The George Washington University. She is a fellow of the Society for Behavioral Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Council on Foreign Relations and the New York Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Gruman is the author of The Experience of the American Patient: Risk, Trust and Choice (Health Behavior Media, 2009); Behavior Matters (Health Behavior Media, 2008) and AfterShock: What to Do When the Doctor Gives You – or Someone You Love – a Devastating Diagnosis (Walker Publishing, second edition, 2010), as well as scientific papers and opinion essays and articles.

A. Seiji Hayashi, MD, MPH, FAAFP is the Chief Medical Officer for the Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hayashi oversees the bureau’s clinical quality strategy for the nation’s 1,100 health center organizations that operate over 8,100 sites. These community health centers, migrant health centers, health care for the homeless centers, and public housing primary care centers provide comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary health care to over 19 million people. Health centers are health homes for more than one in three people living in poverty.
Prior to coming to HRSA, Dr. Hayashi served as Assistant Research Professor of Public Health and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Hayashi worked with community health centers and primary care associations conducting research focused on quality improvement with special emphasis on the use of health information technologies and geographic information systems. At the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s national program office at GWU, he led the ambulatory care quality improvement efforts for the Foundation’s program, Aligning Forces for Quality. As faculty for the School of Public Health and Health Services, he taught Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) as a way to integrate primary care and public health and was director of their MPH program in COPC.
Dr. Hayashi is a board-certified family physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He continues to cares for patients at a federally qualified health center in the District of Columbia.
Dr. Hayashi graduated with honors from Vassar College with a degree in Studio Art. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1997 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. In 2000, he completed the Family and Community Medicine Residency Program at the University of California San Francisco. He received his Masters of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2001 while serving as a fellow for the Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy.

Mary Nanson, RN, MS
Mary Nanson, RN, MS, has been a Director of Case Management for more than 15 years in Community and Academic Medical Centers. She has also directed departments of Quality, Coding, and Risk Management. Currently Director of Case Management at University of Maryland Medical Center (University of Maryland Medical System), her background with many different patient populations in the greater Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas has given her an understanding of the need to discharge patients with strong support during the transition from acute to post acute care in the community. To reach this goal, Mary is part of a team which is developing a transitional care program, including closer relationships between inpatient and outpatient branches of UMMS, grant support agencies and patient insurance companies.

Julie O'Brien, BSN, RN, MS, Vice President/Chief Operating Officer
AliCare Medical Management
Julie O’Brien joined Alicare Medical Management (AMM) as vice president and chief operating officer more than seven years ago. She has complete oversight of all operations at AMM in New Hampshire and Norristown, PA. Ms. O’Brien provides leadership for all aspects of the call center including clinical services, customer service, strategic marketing and product development. She focuses on expansion of services through acquisition of new clients, strategic alliances, joint ventures and overall performance of the company.
Prior to joining AMM, Ms. O’Brien was director of clinical services for Health Dialog where she was responsible for the clinical functions of the facility and Massachusetts General Hospital where she was the administrator for neurology Ms. O’Brien is a Registered Nurse and holds a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and a Master’s in Business with a specialty in Health Care Administration. She is a member of American Nursing Association (ANA), American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AACN) and The Massachusetts Emergency Disaster Team.

Karen Paradiso RN, BSN
Karen Paradiso RN, BSN is Vice President of Client Services for Pharos Innovations and is responsible for implementing Pharos Disease Management programs for clients, including payers, governmental programs and providers. In addition, she is responsible for product and client support, development and implementation of new programs, data analysis and account optimization. Karen has 29 years of healthcare experience, including 15 years as a practicing intensive care nurse. She has a background in disease management ranging from quality assurance to program development. She has been with Pharos Innovations for the past seven years in positions of increasing responsibility for clinical operations and account relationships. Ms. Paradiso received a BSN from Marquette University and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Susan Porretta is a registered nurse with over 20 years experience in the managed care health insurance industry preceded by several years of acute medical/surgical and emergency/trauma clinical nursing. Susan currently is employed as the Director of Health Services Utilization Management with Bravo Health, a Health Spring Company. Bravo Health’s Health Services programs support over 100,000 Medicare Advantage members including Special Needs Plans in the Pennsylvania tri-state and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Susan graduated from Roxborough Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree for RN’s in Healthcare Administration from Philadelphia University. She is a certified InterQual Instructor and holds a Fellow, Academy of Healthcare Management certification with America’s Health Insurance Plans. In addition to Susan’s utilization management experience she has overseen multi-state Medicaid case management program(s), role-based Health Services training and development, and policy administration for a large Blue Cross Plan in Southeastern PA. Prior to joining Bravo Health in April, 2011, Susan managed the Patient Care Management Quality and Compliance program for a National URAC accredited TPA.

Tamara Pruett, RN, CPHM, IQCI, is the Case Management Support Services Program Director at Banner Health. Tamara supports case management in 23 facilities in seven states. Areas of focus include: Workflow Definition, Design and Implementation, Policies and Procedures, Data Collection and Reporting, and Professional Development for Case Management Staff. With over 20 years in healthcare, Tamara has worked in a variety of settings including: Home Health Care, Primary Care Physician’s Office, Acute Physical Rehabilitation, &Inpatient Case Management as staff and as a Department Manager. Tamara serves on the Banner Health Network (ACO) Steering Committee and Readmission Reduction Strategic Initiative Team. Tamara is a Registered Nurse, a Certified Professional in Healthcare Management (CPHM) and a Certified Interqual Instructor (IQCI).

Stephen E. Perkins, MD, serves as vice president of Medical Affairs for UPMC Health Plan. As a member of the Health Plan's senior management team, Dr. Perkins provides clinical leadership for all Quality Improvement, Medical Management, and Provider Network Development activities. In addition, he oversees UPMC Health Plan Community Health Initiatives. Current areas of focus for the Health Plan include payment reform, advancement of Patient Centered Medical Home, and initiatives with UPMC as an integrated finance and delivery system.
Previously, Dr. Perkins served as senior medical director for UPMC Health Plan. In that position, he provided strategic and clinical leadership and medical oversight for the Health Plan's commercial product and served as senior medical director for UPMC WorkPartners' suite of workers' compensation, employee assistance, health promotion, and health management products.
Prior to joining the Health Plan in 2010, Dr. Perkins served for 12 years as corporate medical director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, the largest Vermont-based health coverage carrier. His 30 years in the health care field also included 13 years as a family physician in South Charleston, West Virginia.
Dr. Perkins received his undergraduate degree in biology from West Virginia University and his MD from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown. He completed his residency in Family Practice at Kanawha Valley Family Practice Center in South Charleston, West Virginia.

Ashley Reynolds, MSN, RN, ACSM-HFS leads health services operations for U.S. Preventive Medicine, ensuring our Members receive clinically appropriate and first-rate customer service. He is a seasoned professional with experience leading regional territories and multiple-departments for disease management, health plan and wellness companies. He was integral in U.S. Preventive Medicine’s successful Accreditation in Health Promotion and Wellness from NCQA – one of the first organizations in the in the nation to attain this credential.
Mr. Reynolds has extensive experience in disease management, health promotion, health behavior, managed care, emergency and critical care. From 2003 to 2008, he held management positions within Positive Healthcare, part of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. He also served as case manager for the Northeast Florida AIDS Network and was critical care/ER nurse at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville.
Ashley is a Health and Fitness Specialist, certified by the American College of Sports Medicine. He received both a bachelor and Master of Science in nursing from Jacksonville University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in nursing with a minor in health behavior at the University of Florida. His research is focused on the use of e-health technologies as tools to change behavior. He currently holds memberships in the American Nurses Association, Society for Behavioral Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Terri Ripley is the Director Systems/Programming and ARRA Coordinator for Centra. Her responsibilities include strategic planning and oversight for Centra’s application systems, community health information exchange and Centra’s achievement of Meaningful Use. Terri has over 25 years of health IT experience implementing and integrating hospital systems and electronic health records.
At Centra, her accomplishments include: Centra’s three hospitals and approximately 40% of Centra’s eligible providers achieved Stage 1 Meaningful Use in 2011; Centra partnered with MedVirginia to successfully implement the authorized release of medical information through the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN) to the Social Security Administration (SSA); Contributing to Centra’s four year recognition as one of healthcares Most Wired and Most Wireless hospitals.

Mary Linda Rivera, RN, ND
Executive Director, Cleveland Clinic Office of Patient Experience
As Executive Director for the Cleveland Clinic Office of Patient Experience, Mary Linda Rivera, RN, ND, leads a team that serves as an advisory resource to provide patient experience expertise for critical initiatives throughout the the Cleveland Clinic enterprise. The Patient Experience team provides HCAHPS education, resources and data analytics; identifies, supports and publishes sustainable best practices; provides holistic services for patients, families and employees; supports employee experience, service excellence and patient advocacy initiatives; and collaborates with a variety of departments to ensure the consistent delivery of patient-centered care.
Rivera has nearly 30 years of healthcare operations experience, including three years with Cleveland Clinic Health Care Ventures. Before joining the Cleveland Clinic, she served as the Chief Operating Officer for an infusion and home care network service in Cleveland, where she was responsible for the strategic planning, management and quality of service delivery.
She has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, a not for profit, free standing home health and hospice agency and was responsible for a team of 500+ employees and leadership of the clinical practice departments, education, specialty programs and medical records. Under her leadership, VNS vastly improved clinical and patient satisfaction outcomes to be recognized in the top 5 percent in the country.
Rivera also worked at Cleveland Clinic Health Care Ventures as Director of Clinical Support Services and at University Hospitals Home Care as the Director of Clinical Services.
Rivera earned her Doctor of Nursing degree from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from John Carroll University. Rivera currently lives in Solon, Ohio.

Ronald J. Shumacher, MD, FACP, CMD, Chief Medical Officer for Optum Post-Acute Care. The program was developed when Evercare and Inspiris combined to form one of the nation's largest care delivery and care coordination companies for chronically ill and medically complex seniors.
Dr. Shumacher previously served as Executive Director and Senior Medical Director for Evercare of the Mid-Atlantic, and Medical Director and Vice President of Clinical Delivery for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. Prior to his position within United Health Group, Dr. Shumacher practiced Internal Medicine and Geriatrics in Montgomery County, Maryland and served as the Medical Director of the Trinity Senior Living Community in Burtonsville, Maryland. He has extensive experience as a clinician and Medical Director in skilled nursing facilities, sub-acute rehabilitation, assisted living, and home health.
Dr. Shumacher is board certified in Internal Medicine, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American College of Physician Executives and the American Medical Directors Association. He is a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care, having completed the requirements of the American Medical Directors Certification Program. He received his B.A. from Stanford University, his M.D. from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and completed his training in Internal Medicine at the Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Patrice Smith
Director of Public Relations
Patrice Smith is Director of Public Relations at the National Program Offices of Kaiser Permanente. She is responsible for stakeholder engagement as well as media and public relations activities for the large health care integrated delivery system, which operates health plans, hospitals, and physician groups in nine states and the District of Columbia, serving nearly 9 million members. In addition, Patrice manages special projects, including the promotion of books written by Kaiser Permanente executives and the Every Body Walk! campaign, a digital media initiative about the health benefits of walking that can be viewed at www.everybodywalk.org.
Patrice has an extensive background in public relations and marketing. Over the past two decades, she has honed her skills in corporate and agency settings. She has managed high profile corporate communications departments at Blue Shield of California and McKesson Corporation. While at the GCI Group, a worldwide communications firm, Patrice focused on media relations, crisis communications and issues management for a who’s who of health care and public affairs clients, ranging from BART, Levi Strauss, Jack In The Box and California Gold Dairy Products.
Just prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Patrice headed marketing communications at Bank of the West, a full-service bank that served customers in 19 Western and Midwestern States. She was responsible for customer communications, direct mail and online marketing. Early in her career, she held communications positions at TakeCare Health Plan and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation.
Patrice has a BA in Public Relations from San Jose State University. She is also a member of the Public Relations Society of America. In her spare time, she lends her communications skills to various non-profit organizations.

Patrice Tanaka
Co-Chair, Chief Creative Officer, whatcanbeSM Ambassador, CRT/tanaka
Patrice Tanaka is co-chair, chief creative officer and whatcanbe ambassador for CRT/tanaka, an entity she helped co-found in September 2005. Her agency has been recognized as the “Best Agency to Work for in America,” “Most Admired Mid-Size PR Agency in the U.S.” and “#1 Most Creative PR Agency in America,” among other accolades by various PR organizations and trade media. CRT/tanaka has also won more than 300 PR and marketing awards for client campaigns.
Born and raised in Hawaii, Patrice graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1974 and following that worked as an editor at Hawaii Press Newspapers in Honolulu and later served as PR Director of the Hotel Inter-Continental Maui in Wailea. In 1979, she fulfilled a life-long, whatcanbe dream of moving to New York City. Patrice joined Jessica Dee Communications, a PR agency she helped to build, which was acquired by Chiat/Day Advertising in 1987. In 1990, she led a management buyback of a group of 11 colleagues to co-found the employee-owned PT&Co. and served as the PR agency’s CEO & Chief Creative Officer. In 2005, Patrice and her co-founders sold PT&Co. to Richmond, Va.-based Carter Ryley Thomas to form CRT/tanaka, an agency founded on the brand vision and promise of whatcanbe.
A widow since 2003, Patrice lives in Manhattan. She devotes much of her free time to serving on the boards of non-profit organizations dedicated to helping women and girls, including the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York, Futures Without Violence (formerly the Family Violence Prevention Fund), the American Friends of Phelophepa (the South African health care train) and Asian Women in Business. She also serves on the Past Presidents Council of New York Women in Communications and is a former trustee and member of the Women’s Forum New York.
Patrice is also a competitive ballroom dancer and avid tennis player. Her book entitled, Becoming Ginger Rogers…How Ballroom Dancing Made Me a Happier Woman, a Better Partner and a Smarter CEO, was published in September 2011 by BenBella Books.

Annette C. Watson, RN-BC, CCM, MBA
Annette C. Watson, RN-BC, CCM, MBA, serves as senior vice president of community transformation at Taconic IPA, a 4,000+ member physician organization that optimizes the quality and value of medical services in the greater Hudson Valley of New York state through patient-centered quality improvement initiatives. With more than 25 years’ experience in health care executive leadership focused on quality improvement and cultural transformation through innovation and collaboration, she is a vocal advocate of patient-centered care built on a foundation of care coordination performed by experts and aided by state-of-the-art health information technology.
Ms. Watson is also the founder and principal of Watson International Consulting, a privately-held consulting firm specializing in the effective design of strategies that result in health and human services organizational performance improvement consistent with the IOM Six Aims and the IHI Triple Aim. Affiliated with several consulting partners, her consulting engagements have included the U.S. Department of Defense/TRICARE, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates/Atrius, Apria Healthcare, and the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine/ University of Arizona.
Previously, Ms. Watson served as managing director of global emerging business for CARF International, and as senior vice president at URAC, where she was also the organization’s first chief accreditation officer. Prior to working in the accreditation field, she held executive, management and clinical positions in the hospital, home health, family practice, insurance and managed care settings.
Ms. Watson served as chair of the Commission for Case Manager Certification from June 2010 – June 2011; she has served as a Commissioner since 2007. A member of several professional associations, she is a long-term member of the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) and was a founding member of the New England chapter. She is also a member of the American Association of Nurse Executives (AONE), a member of the Women Business Leaders in Health Care Foundation (WBL) and a past advisory board member of that organization.
Throughout her career, Ms. Watson has served on numerous committees and task forces, including the National Quality Forum's Research and Quality Council, the National Business Coalition on Health's Healthcare Leadership Council, the Disease Management Association of America’s Patient Safety Committee, the Academy for Health Care Management AHIP Curriculum Advisory Committee and the American College of Medical Quality Forum on Quality in Managed Care. She is presently serving as a steering committee member for a Commonwealth Fund-supported assessment of primary care-based care management programs for complex, high-cost patients.
