Hospice Care on the Rise

The amount of patients utilizing hospice care has doubled over the past ten years, according to numbers from U.S. News & World Report.
Additionally, in the past five years, the number of providers has increased by roughly 42 percent to about 4,700 in full. Of that number, 47 percent are for-profit. Further evidence of the hospice boom comes via Medicare spending. Since 2000, the amount of money spent on hospice by the governmental insurance program has increased 230 percent — from $3 billion to $10 billion.
