The Department of Health and Human Services has released $9 million of stimulus funds to combat healthcare-associated infections in ambulatory surgical centers, a fast-growing patient service provider. While ambulatory settings account for more than 40 percent of all same-day surgery, or about 15 million procedures per year, the government has targeted them as a prime intervention point to employ greater infection control measures and curtail this preventable killer. To determine need, state agencies will survey ambulatory centers with a federal infection control tool.
