Individuals who have received a stent implant to counteract coronary complications are at an increased risk of surgical complications when faced with another, non-cardiac surgery—particularly within six weeks of the stent operation. Scottish researchers found that 42 percent of stent recipients, when faced with a second surgery, were more likely to experience heart problems, such as decreased blood flow or heart attacks. The same outcomes occurred in 13 percent of patients who waited six weeks after the stent surgery for a second operation. Many American organizations call for a wait time of one year for surgical operations following a stent emplacement.
