A study of more than 300,000 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has identified a link between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the likeliness of risk factors for heart disease. Among the 25 percent of returning service members who suffer from PTSD, roughly one-half battle depression and one-fourth experience anxiety disorder, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The prevalence of PTSD and related mental health disorders led to a rise in heart disease risk factors, including tobacco use, high blood pressure and obesity. Though nearly 90 percent of the subjects were male, PTSD was linked to these risk factors in women as well.
