For insurers looking to cut cost, boosting co-pays for doctor visits may tax the health care system, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine involving some 900,000 Medicare patients. Calling it a “counterproductive” approach, the study shows that the reduction in doctor visits resulting from increased co-pay levels leads to resultant risk in a population that may be sacrificing health needs to save money, resulting in increased hospitalization and, in fact, inflated costs.
