In this edition of Ask the Expert, a reader proposes a question about accreditation standards. We consulted with expert Cynthia Whitaker, a clinical accreditation reviewer for URAC, to talk about formal programs and quality improvement projects.


Q: As a result of our seeking URAC accreditation for case management, I have been put in charge of my department’s quality program. I don’t understand why a formal quality program is required by the URAC standards, and I am having problems developing the two required quality improvement projects. What can I do?

A: Many people, whether in health care professions or not, remember the 2000 report issued by the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Quality of Healthcare in America, To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, which made national headlines when it concluded that preventable medical mistakes were the eighth leading cause of death in America, and brought the issue of patient safety to the forefront. Even more shocking is that other studies estimated nearly twice as many deaths due to medical errors during the same time period, putting additional emphasis on the need for patient safety initiatives as part of a national health care overhaul.

Planning a successful event can be an overwhelming experience. Where do I start? How do I budget? What type of location? The list goes on and on. Whether you are charged with developing an event independently or with a committee, consider these items to help you navigate through the initial development process.

What is the reason for the event?

Do you want to discuss workflows, a common topic, or diverse areas? Does your audience have learning needs? Or is it a combination of various items? Answering these questions will help you develop a good base to move through the process. If the reason for the event is not clear, readdress those who are requesting an event. Without direction, planning and marketing the event will be a ponderous ordeal.

A fundamental strategy when times are tough.

Conventional wisdom says that health care is a safe place to toil in a bad economy. While no sector can escape the pain entirely — diminished public funding and private philanthropy are of great concern — the demand for services and labor remains fairly steady.

But you do not have to lose your job or face a foreclosure to feel the pull of a downturn. It may affect you in the form of lesser fortunate family members and friends, or in declining asset values to which none of us is immune. While your staff may remain intact, they may feel uneasy or distracted and may be prone to performing less than optimally.
