Complications and adverse outcomes can affect 40-50 percent of surgical patients. Across the country, that means perioperative adverse events affect more than 1 million people and result in excess costs of approximately $25 billion. The major adverse outcomes are related to surgery associated infections, but also include venous thromboembolic events (VTE) which incorporate deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus, cardiac events, and respiratory failure.

One woman’s battle to overcome an eating disorder amid a groundswell of emotions.

Amanda walks off the plane and sees a person holding a sign with her first name and last initial. Driving to the inpatient treatment center, she reflects on how she got to this place in her life. Amanda had years of unsuccessful outpatient treatment to address her anorexia and depression. A month ago, she was admitted to the emergency room as a result of fainting from extensive calorie restriction. As a result, she agreed with reluctance to inpatient treatment.

What to do when encountering shipwrecked parties in the sea of workers’ compensation

A plant worker at a chemical manufacturer was involved in an explosion that killed a co-worker and caused partial and full thickness burns that covered 30 percent of his body, including parts of his torso, face and extremities. During a home visit following his discharge from the rehabilitation facility, he made a statement verging on the incredulous. “I have been with the company for over 25 years, never missed a day of work, and always came in when they called,” he said. “I willingly worked overtime when asked and I didn’t even get a Christmas card from them this year.”
